AUBURN, Ala. — TWU struggled in its season opener at No. 13 Auburn on Friday night, falling to the Tigers 194.875-189.825.

The Pioneers opened their season on uneven bars in the first rotation. TWU counted two falls in the event and scored just 46.600. Senior Bethany Larimer led the team with 9.675, while senior Amy Winczura and freshman Katie Simpson each scored 9.600.

In the second rotation on vault, TWU scored a 47.825 with three gymnasts posting 9.550 or higher. Larimer once again led the team with 9.750, while Winczura scored 9.675 and senior Brittany Montalbano posted 9.550.

The Pioneers moved to floor exercise and had just five gymnasts compete. TWU had three gymnasts score 9.700 or higher but counted a fall to finish with 46.975. Montalabano was the team leader with 9.725, while senior Margaret Mayfield and junior Stephanie Repp finished with 9.700.

The Pioneers finished strong on balance beam and outperformed the host team, winning the event 48.425-47.650. Senior Brittainy Johnson led TWU with 9.800 and placed second overall. Repp and freshman Carley Carter finished with 9.675.

“It’s not the way you want to start the meet, but we didn’t let it bring us down the rest of the day,” TWU coach Lisa Bowerman said. “We did a great job on beam, and it’s exciting to see our two freshmen perform well in their first collegiate meet. We didn’t have lot of depth on floor. Spencer Jones was sick and we lost her from the lineup today.”

The Pioneers will make their home debut at 7 p.m. next Saturday against Air Force in a dual meet at Kitty Magee Arena.
