Women’s basketball: TWU tops Aggies for first road win

LAWTON, Okla. — Senior Rebekah Cluley and junior Ria Pateraki each scored 14 points to lead TWU to a 66-53 victory at Cameron on Thursday night.

TWU’s first win away from Kitty Magee Arena improved its record to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference.

Pateraki shot 60.0 percent from the floor while Cluley cleared seven rebounds and handed out five assists. Barbara-Scott Kolb also reached double digits with 13 points and dished out five assists. Toree Mason missed a double-double by one point as she posted nine points and a team-best 13 rebounds.

The Pioneers scored the game’s first five points before Cameron went on an 8-0 run. TWU responded with a 10-0 run to take a 15-8 lead at the 13:18 mark. The Pioneers pushed their lead to 12 with 2:42 to go in the first half, but Cameron closed the opening frame on a 7-0 run.

TWU pushed the lead back to 12 early in the second half and took the game’s biggest lead, 45-31, at the 11:19 mark. The Aggies rallied to cut the deficit to five with two minutes to go, but the Pioneers went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to seal the win.

TWU outrebounded the Aggies 44-31 and had a 28-24 advantage in the paint. The Pioneers scored 16 points off of Cameron’s 14 turnovers. TWU handed out 18 assists on 24 made field goals and committed only nine turnovers.

“Great team win,” TWU coach Beth Jillson said. “We played with lots of energy and confidence. We did an excellent job on the boards and offensively played strong team basketball with 18 assists and only nine turnovers.”

TWU will return to action at 6 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Midwestern State on “BBQ & Basketball” night. The first 200 fans will receive a free Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q meal.
