Cole-Lewis, Shade among leaders for TWU in victory

DALLAS -- An all-around team effort by TWU secured a 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 win over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night.

TWU's Miri Shade and Briley Cole-Lewis each posted a team-high nine kills, while Makayla Mayfield and Courtney Noel tallied eight apiece. Katy Ranes notched her third double-double with a match-high 31 assists and 11 digs. Bailey French and Mayfield paced the defense with a dozen kills apiece while Erin Jones tallied 10.

Noel registered a kill and DBU recorded an attack error for a 10-5 Pioneer advantage in Set 1. The Patriots (6-8) crept back to within 13-12, but a kill by Cole-Lewis and solo block from Noel increased TWU's lead to 17-13. A kill by Haley Collins pushed the score to 22-16, and the senior provided a solo block for the final point of the set.

A pair of kills by Cole-Lewis and an ace from French put TWU (6-9) up 6-2 in the second set, but DBU was able to take its first lead at 10-9. The Pioneers scored five straight to go up 14-10 before the Patriots knotted the set at 17. TWU closed with a 7-0 run that included an ace by Mayfield into the center of the defense and a Shade kill through a block.

A kill by Mayfield in Set 3 broke a 6-all tie, and kills by French and Noel extended the lead to 9-6. Kills by Shade and Cole-Lewis along with an ace by Ranes put the Pioneers up 16-9. The Patriots closed to within 22-19, but the Pioneers held on for the win.

"Our team defense today was really impressive," TWU coach Jeff Huebner said. "The players did a really good job of staying in rallies and taking big swings in transition. DBU plays great defense, so I was glad we were able to match their intensity. I'm proud of us for managing midgame runs, and we had good leadership tonight."

The Pioneers will host Western New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. Friday on faculty and staff appreciation day.
