Seniors Chelsea Martin and Jackie Bucy, along with the TWU Soccer Field, had their Pioneer home careers conclude in exciting fashion Sunday afternoon as Lucero Chavez headed in the golden goal during overtime for a 3-2 win against West Texas A&M.
While TWU seniors Martin and Bucy took in their final home game, the field itself also saw its last competition, as it will be transformed into university housing to support the growing campus community. The Pioneers will continue play on a new on-campus field in 2018 with a site to be announced.
With the teams tied 2-2 three minutes into overtime, Jazmine Navarro kicked a cross across the net to Chavez who put the game-winning header into the near post for the win.
To begin the scoring on the afternoon, Martin found Haley Ward in the 11th minute with a pass across the goal for Ward's fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 Pioneer lead.
In the 23rd minute, Martin joined in on the scoring effort with her sixth goal on the year on a shot off of a rebound from WT's goalkeeper in front of the goal with an assist from Maddi Nolton.
WT earned a goal on a deflection off of a cross with a shot from the top of the box just over the outstretched arms of keeper Maddie Vickroy to close within 2-1 in the 33rd minute.
The Lady Buffs evened the score at 2-2 in the 56th minute on a shot off of a deflection.
"Our team showed a lot of resilience today. From Haley and Chelsea scoring a goal each, to WT scoring two goals, to having Lucero score the game-winner in OT was great to see," head coach Babak Abouzar said. "We had a lot of people step up and play some significant minutes. This is the type of result we needed heading into the last two games of conference play."
The Pioneers embark on their final regular season road trip of the season as they travel to Angelo State Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
