Strickland eighth-grader Javon Sherrill came up big when the Vikings needed it most and the result was a 38-35 A-team victory over McMath on Thursday.
Sherrill hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to put the Vikings ahead, then came up with a steal and a pass to Joe Niu for a layup at the buzzer to complete a second-half rally.
McMath led throughout the first three quarters and held a 29-21 advantage heading into the fourth period.
Jalin Brown led the Vikings with 16 points while Sherrill finished with nine. Lynn Brice had six points and 11 rebounds, and Nick Brooks had five points. Niu had six steals.
Harpool eighth-grade C 23, Calhoun 11
Harpool took advantage of a two-quarter scoring drought by Calhoun.
The teams were tied at 4 after the first quarter before Calhoun went scoreless for two quarters and Harpool took a 19-4 lead into the fourth.
Conrad Sneed led Calhoun with four points and three rebounds. Armando Ruiz had two points and four rebounds.
Navo eighth-grade A 53, Calhoun 14
Navo used a 21-point first quarter to take a commanding lead.
Alexus Evans led all scorers with 18 points for Navo, and Julia McKeathen had 12 points and eight assists. Carly Lesue had a team-high seven rebounds, while Sydney Finch and Abby McNeil led the Lady Panthers’ defensive effort.
Strickland eighth-grade A 37, McMath 26
Strickland used a strong defensive effort in the first half coupled with balanced scoring to jump out to a huge lead.
Strickland held McMath to four points in the first half while the Lady Vikings scored 20.
Ivon Diaz led the Lady Vikings with 15 points while Julie Guerrero had eight.
Lily Mansour led McMath (1-5) with 11 points and hit a half-court shot at the end of the game, and Lindsay DeVore scored six points.
Strickland eighth-grade B 30, McMath 17
The McMath Lady Tigers were overwhelmed by the Strickland offense in the first half.
Strickland jumped out to a 10-4 first-quarter lead and held a 20-6 halftime advantage.
Elim Serrano led McMath with eight points, Jennifer Barahona had three and Lydia Pluscht and LaPorsche Woods each scored two.
McMath eighth-grade C 6, Strickland 6 (OT)
Strickland rallied from a four-point deficit to tie the game in the third quarter, and the Lady Vikings and McMath battled through a scoreless overtime period.
Alora Saxton led McMath with four points and Cindy Alvarez had two.
Little Elm eighth-grade A 51, Harpool 31
Little Elm jumped out to a 13-point first-quarter lead and cruised.
Little Elm led 18-5 after the first quarter and increased the lead to 32-11 at halftime.
Lauren Heard led Harpool (5-3) with 17 points, Sydney Swann had seven and Madison Freeze five.
Harpool eighth-grade B 19, Little Elm 10
The Harpool Lady Longhorns turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter to hold Little Elm scoreless and pull away.
Lauren Belton led Harpool (5-3) with 10 points. Jasmine Deckard finished with four.
Harpool eighth-grade C 10, Little Elm 9
The Harpool Lady Longhorns went scoreless for two quarters but rallied with an eight-point fourth period to claim the victory.
Elle Bigelow led Harpool (6-2) with six points.
