Middle school basketball: Sanders scores 18 as Strickland rolls

The Strickland seventh-grade Vikings, behind a balanced A-team attack, exploded for 33 second-half points to race past the Crownover Cowboys 59-41 on Monday night.

The Vikings (8-4) led 26-20 at halftime before scoring 18 third-quarter points and 15 more in the fourth to overwhelm Crownover.

Spencer Sanders led the charge for the Vikings with 18 points, while Kosi Eldridge added 13, Joseph Frisby had 10, Trayvon Brockington scored eight and Cole Canuteson and Caleb Determan had four apiece.

 

Crownover seventh-grade B 27, Strickland 21

The Crownover Cowboys put together an 11-point fourth quarter to pull away for a hard-fought victory over the Strickland Vikings.

Strickland (2-7) led 5-3 after the first quarter and trailed 11-10 at halftime. The Cowboys held a 16-15 advantage heading into the decisive fourth quarter.

Ja’kye Scott led Strickland with 11 points and had two steals. Trevor Durante had five points and Patrick Berg finished with three. Abraham Hernandez led Strickland’s defenders with four steals, while Brendon Bishop had six rebounds and three blocks.

 

Crownover seventh-grade C 14, Strickland 8

After a sluggish first half, the Crownover Cowboys put up 10 second-half points to pull away.

The Cowboys scored just four first-half points before their 10-point second half.

Jalen McGee led Strickland (2-5) with eight points.

 

Girls

Crownover seventh-grade A 26, McMath 17

The Crownover Lady Cowboys turned up the offensive and defensive pressure in the second half and it was too much for the McMath Lady Tigers to overcome.

Crownover trailed 11-10 at halftime but outscored McMath 16-6 in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Kate Cowan led McMath with six points, while Miles Baker had five and BreAnna Wofford four. Lucy Martin, Sofia Batt, Holly Higgs, McKenzie Sprabary, Melissa Rwehumbiza, Stephanie Williamson, Alyssa Williamson and Zoe Neale also had strong performances for the Lady Tigers (3-6).

 

Crownover seventh-grade B 36, McMath 9

The Crownover Lady Cowboys scored 22 first-half points while limiting McMath to just five as Crownover coasted.

Crownover held McMath scoreless in the first quarter while scoring 10 points.

Jessica Wences led McMath (2-7) with three points, while Peyton Overton, Yetzzi Perez and Kimberly Gonzales had two apiece. Other strong efforts came from Yuli Flores, Abby Poston, Alese Walther, Ruth Magdeleno, Kiarra Ibarra and Erika Samaniego.

 

Crownover seventh-grade C 20, McMath 7

The Crownover Lady Cowboys jumped out to an eight-point first-quarter lead and increased it to 16 points at halftime.

The Lady Cowboys outscored McMath 10-2 in the first quarter and 8-0 in the second.

Tatianna Jones led McMath with four points and Cynthia Alvarez had three. Destiny Woods, Becky Vasquez, Maria Ramirez, Hannah Guerrero, Elli Halbert and Avery Lawrence turned in strong efforts for the Lady Tigers.
