Middle school football: Jefferson, Ponsonby each post two touchdowns in Crownover victory

Devon Jefferson and Trent Ponsonby each scored two touchdowns as the Crownover Cowboys rolled to a 26-14 victory over Little Elm on Tuesday in eighth-grade A-team action.

Jefferson’s first touchdown came after teammate Arian Bhat blocked a field goal attempt by Little Elm. Jefferson picked up the ball and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown. Later, Jefferson scored on a 4-yard run and Colton Phillps added the point after.

Ponsonby scored on runs of 11 and 3 yards and also ran in a conversion. Ponsonby also had a interception.

Trevon Turner led the Cowboys with 87 yards rushing on nine attempts behind the strong play of offensive linemen Bhat, Aaron Ali, Skylar McLerran, J.T. Thompson and Josh Nicholson.

Lake Dallas eighth-grade A 18, Myers 6

Despite the strong play of Taukie Dove, the Myers Titans lost a hard-fought battle with Lake Dallas.

Dove had seven big catches, including a 30-yard pass from Jordan Rucker for the Titans’ score late in the third quarter.

Lake Dallas eighth-grade B 24, Myers 6

Edgar Rodriguez scored on a 70-yard run as the Myers Titans fell to Lake Dallas.

Harpool eighth-grade A 28, Strickland 20

The Harpool Longhorns (2-0) used strong offensive play from Luke Stillwell, Le’Tre Darthard, Caleb Gill and Mark Loza and a solid defensive effort in the second half to pull out an eight-point victory.

Stillwell caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Darthard and added a pair of extra-point kicks, Gill scored on a 6-yard run and Loza had TD runs of 43 and 17 yards. Loza finished with 82 yards on eight carries.

Also starring for the Longhorns was Wyatt Gaines, who had an interception and a 35-yard punt return, and De’Ray Darthard, who returned a kickoff 60 yards.

Harpool eighth-grade B 25, Strickland 0

Chad Ricker threw three touchdown passes in leading Harpool (1-0-1) past Strickland.

Ricker connected twice with Reed Whilhoit for touchdowns and hit Nate Graham on a 70-yard score. Xavier Fugett scored the other Longhorn touchdown on a 15-yard run.

Navo eighth-grade A 32, Calhoun 0

Adrian Wilson scored three times in leading the Navo Panthers to a shutout victory over Calhoun.

Wilson scored on runs of 18 and 40 yards and returned a Calhoun kickoff for a touchdown. Omar Ross hit Caleb Richardson with a 50-yard scoring pass and K’Andre Jackson scored on a reverse play for Navo (2-0).

Harpool seventh-grade A 36, Strickland 0

Five players got into the scoring action as the Harpool Longhorns evened their record at 1-1 with a shutout victory over Strickland.

Chris Brooks, Caleb Vercek, Josh Gillenwater and Ronald Taylor each scored rushing touchdowns, while Christian Reyes picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

Riley Wood led the rushing attack for the Longhorns with 47 yards on four carries, while Brooks had 43 yards on three carries. Chris Beeler made a fumble recovery.

Harpool seventh-grade B 25, Strickland 0

Behind the rushing attack of Ty Mongo and the defensive play of Jared Tice and Max Lewis, the Harpool Longhorns improved to 2-0.

Mongo rushed for two touchdowns while Tice and Lewis each had interception returns for touchdowns.

Navo seventh-grade A 42, Calhoun 0

The Navo Panthers used a strong running attack and a stingy defensive effort to roll to a shutout victory over the Calhoun Cougars.

Deondre Dansby, Kiran Anderson andAlejandro Rivera led the offensive charge. Dansby scored three touchdowns on runs of 70, 50 and 38 yards.Kiran Anderson scored from 38 yards out and Alejandro Rivera punched one in from the 5 yard line, while Jeremiah Richardson returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. Palmer Campbell caught three conversion passes, and Coby Martin kicked two extra points for Navo (1-1).

Navo seventh-grade B 27, Calhoun 0

Kerrell Woods and Christian Hernandez led the Navo Panthers as they imrpoved to 2-0.

Woods and Hernandez each scored twice in the shutout victory.

Crownover seventh-grade A 19, Little Elm 8

Devion Harmon and Cole Schroeder proved to be too much for Little Elm Lakeside to handle. Harmon caught three touchdown passes from Schroeder as Crownover improved to 2-0.

Harmon caught TD passes of 53, 40 and 95 yards from Schroeder, who finished 4-of-6 for 191 yards.

Harmon also starred on the defensive unit by forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass. Joining him as defensive standouts were Kellan Landstad, Payne Williams, Isaac Carrillo, Dyland Parham, Connor Briggs, Alvaro Rodriguez and Mario Alea-Ngongo.

Crownover seventh-grade B 12, Little Elm 12

The Crownover Cowboys, behind a total team effort, battled Little Elm to a draw.

Jack Massey scored on a 45-yard pass play from quarterback Sasha Stone, and Stone scored on a 3-yard run.

Daniel Thompson, Quinn Southern, Gavin Wenster, Austin Beall, Steven Gomez, Reese Alexander, Noah Minnassian and Nate Schiele turned in strong offensive efforts, while Bryce Jurado, Josh Domenico and Ryan Goswick led the Crownover defense.

Myers seventh-grade B 13, Lake Dallas 13

The Myers Titans used a couple of big plays to battle Lake Dallas to a tie.

Blake Cowart scored one of the Titans’ touchdowns on a 60-yard run, and DJ Tomczyk added the other on a 100-yard interception return.
