Middle school football: Sanders leads Vikings to win over Cowboys

Strickland’s Spencer Sanders scored three times and had an interception to lead the eighth-grade Vikings to a 26-16 victory over the Crownover Cowboys on Wednesday night in A-team action.

Sanders, who finished the night with 80 yard rushing, scored on running plays of 7 and 6 yards and also caught a 53-yard scoring pass from Kosi Eldridge. Alejandro Mora had 52 yards rushing, including a 27-yard scoring run. Brenden Bishop led Strickland (3-2) defensively with nine tackles.

For Crownover (2-3), Trent Ponsonby threw for one score and rushed for another to lead the offense. Ponsonby hit Brandon Arreaga with a 40-yard touchdown pass and scored on a 12-yard run. Taylor Wallace added two extra-point kicks.

Harpool eighth-grade A 13, Lake Dallas 0

The Harpool Longhorns combined the offensive play of Ronaldo Ortega, De’ray Darthard and Luke Stillwell with an air-tight defense to record a shutout of Lake Dallas and remain unbeaten at 4-0.

Ortega rushed for 48 yards, scored on an 11-yard run and passed for 30 yards, including a 5-yard scoring pass to Darthard.

Darthard also stripped the ball from a Lake Dallas ball carrier and recovered the fumble, while Stillwell rushed for 47 yards and passed for 45 yards.

Lake Dallas eighth-grade B 24, Harpool 22

Nate Graham scored twice and Chad Ricker scored once, but Harpool (1-2-1) came up short in a two-point loss to Lake Dallas.

Ricker scored on a 45-yard run and hit Graham with a 50-yard scoring strike. Graham also scored on a 3-yard run. Bryce Hauk added two extra-point kicks.

McMath eighth-grade A 32, Navo 6

Behind equally balanced offensive and defensive attacks, the McMath Tigers improved to 4-0 for the season with an impressive victory over the Navo Tigers.

Nick Edwards rushed for 85 yards and scored on a 60-yard run, while quarterback Clayton Tune passed for 105 yards to lead the McMath offense. Tyrus Johnson had 55 yards in receptions and one touchdown and caused a fumble that teammate Wilson Strange picked up and returned 28 yards for a score. Alex Roussos added four extra-point kicks to the McMath total.

Jeovanni Dodson had a interception and returned it 34 yards for a score, while Juan Rabago and Jacob Dean also played well defensively for McMath.

Navo won the B-team game 19-0.

Crownover eighth-grade A 12, Strickland 6

Tyler Dooty and Dabira Ogunwuyi each scored as the Crownover Cowboys took a hard-fought victory over Strickland.

Dooty scored on a 20-yard TD run and Ogunwuyi scampered in from 60 yards as Crownover improved to 3-1-1. Robbie Simmons led the defense with an interception.

Navo seventh-grade A 46, McMath 36

Navo’s Deondre Dansby and McMath’s Corbin Shelly each scored five touchdowns, but the Navo Panthers were able to outlast McMath.

Joining Dansby in the scoring for the Panthers (3-2) were Alejandro Rivera, who had a rushing touchdown, and Kirby Taylor, who returned an interception for a TD.

For McMath (2-1-1), Josh King had three extra-point kicks while Connor Roche, Mason Davis and Jaden Oberkrom played well for the Tigers.

Navo seventh-grade B 18, McMath 0

Kerrell Woods and Jeremiah Richardson combined for three touchdowns as the Navo Panthers improved to 5-0 with a shutout win.

Woods scored two touchdowns and Richardson added the final score for the Panthers.

Antonio Woods, Nathan Estes, Michael Stewart and Brenden Cooper played well for McMath.

Lake Dallas seventh-grade A 20, Harpool 14

Lake Dallas used a late defensive stand to turn back the Harpool Longhorns.

Blake Galan hit on five of seven passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 32 yards, while Julian Mendoza added 22 yards on seven carries for the Longhorns.

Caleb Verceck and Christian Reyes had receiving touchdowns for the Longhorns (2-2). Pyrese Smith had one reception for 10 yards, while Brent Jackson was good on one PAT kick.

Harpool seventh-grade B 6, Lake Dallas 0

A strong defensive effort by the Harpool Longhorns led to a shutout victory.

Ty Mongo’s rushing touchdown accounted for the only score for Harpool (4-0).

Crownover seventh-grade A 20, Strickland 0

Cole Schroeder and Isaac Carrillo produced all the scoring for the Crownover Cowboys as they remained unbeaten on the season at 4-0-1.

Schroeder scored on runs of 42 and 12 yards, while Carrillo had a 13-yard TD run to lead the Cowboy offense. Also playing well were Marcus Hendricks and Connor Briggs.

Crownover seventh-grade B 31, Strickland 0

Dejuan Harris scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Crownover Cowboys (3-1-1) in a lopsided victory over the Strickland Vikings.

Harris scored on runs of 35 and 47 yards, while Nate Schiele had a 4-yard TD run, Ryan Goswick scored on a 27-yard run and Peter Hays had a 5-yard TD run. Cooper Vennel, Jaiden Tucker and Sasha Stone also played well.
