Sub-varsity football: McMath rallies late for win

LITTLE ELM — The McMath Tigers opened the season with a 10-8 upset of defending district champion Little Elm in an epic eighth-grade A-team battle Tuesday night.

The Tigers scored 10 unanswered points in the final four minutes to secure the thrilling win.

Deo Rendon-Williams started the McMath comeback with an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Juan Reyna kicked the extra point to tie the game at 8.

Minutes later, Dylan Baker tackled a Little Elm punt returner for a game-winning safety following an impressive punt by Reyna with 1:30 remaining.

Williams also caused a fumble, recovered a fumble and had a tackle for a loss to lead the defensive effort.

In the B-team game, Little Elm earned a 19-0 victory.

 

Calhoun eighth-grade A 32, Crownover 0

Calhoun dominated from the in the season opener for both teams.

Tyeke Davis opened the scoring for the Cougars with a 45-yard touchdown run. Then Jason Gulley ripped off a 35-yard TD run. Thomas Wilson followed with a 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Later in the game, Caleb Osufa scored on a 37-yard touchdown run.

Calhoun won the B-team game in an 18-6 decision.

 

Calhoun seventh-grade A 25, Crownover 7

Adrian Wilson carried 12 times for 175 yards and scored three touchdowns in leading Calhoun to a win over Crownover.

Wilson scored on runs of 60, 50 and 30 yards. Meanwhile, Gabe Douglass scored on a 25-yard TD pass from Jordan Rucker.

For Crownover, Trevon Turner scored a rushing touchdown. Trent Ponsonby and Colton Phillips shared quarterbacking duties for the Cowboys. Braydon Smith had an interception and Conner Riddle recovered a fumble on a punt play.

Crownover won the B-team game 15-14. Jacob Ricardo recorded a safety to end the game in the fourth quarter.

Harrison Babbitt threw two touchdowns for the Cowboys, one to Josh Burgess and another to Garrett Keuer.

 

Little Elm seventh-grade A 33, McMath 6

Little Elm had little trouble in turning back McMath in the season opener for both teams.

The lone bright spot for the Tigers was Austin Llanes, who scored on a 2-yard touchdown run led by Jeovanni Dodson.

Little Elm won the B-team game 38-0.

 

Lake Dallas seventh-grade A 13, Navo 0

Lake Dallas opened its season with a win over Navo. Then, the Lake Dallas B team blanked Navo 20-0.

 

Harpool seventh-grade A 31, Strickland 31

Harpool scored the tying touchdown in the final two seconds to help it avoid a loss in its season opener.

Mark Loza rushed for 141 yards on 17 carries for the Longhorns. Meanwhile, Luke Stillwell rushed for 107 yards on 10 carries.

Harpool won the B-team game 20-6.
