Middle School football: Unbeaten Crownover, McMath seventh-graders battle to tie

In a matchup of unbeaten squads, the seventh-grade Crownover Cowboys and McMath Tigers battled to a 30-30 deadlock Monday night in A-team action.

Crownover entered the game with a 3-0 record, while McMath stood at 2-0.

The game was filled with standout individual performances. McMath’s Corbin Shelly scored four touchdowns for the Tigers, and Joshua King added three extra-point kicks. On defense, the Tigers were led by Isaiah Wolford and Connor Roche with interceptions, while Wolford also had a fumble recovery and Oscar Gonzalez was one of the leading tacklers.

Crownover’s Devion Harmon and Cole Schroeder had two touchdowns apiece. Harmon scored on a 75-yard kickoff return and a 47-yard pass from Schroeder, who had scoring runs of 2 and 12 yards. Isaac Carrillo scored the other Cowboy touchdown on a 20-yard run.

Harmon and Connor Briggs each had a fumble recovery for the Cowboys, while Marcus Hendricks and Dominic Daniel had big games on offense for Crownover.

Strickland eighth-grade A 16, Lake Dallas 8

Spencer Sanders scored two touchdowns and the Strickland defense had a pair of fourth-quarter stands in the Vikings’ victory over Lake Dallas.

Sanders, who finished the evening with 130 yards rushing, scored on 3- and 17-yard runs, and Luis Cantu added the extra-point kicks.

Brendon Bishop had 27 yards rushing for the Vikings, while Jack Barrilleaux and Kosi Eldridge were standouts on defense for Strickland (2-2).

Harpool eighth-grade A 39, Calhoun 6

Tino Rodriguez intercepted a Harpool pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown as the Calhoun Cougars fell short.

Will Holtz had four catches for 40 yards and Vicente Estrade had one catch for 40 yards to lead the Cougar offense. Jonathan Carrion and Devon Thetford led the Cougar defense with four tackles apiece.

Calhoun eighth-grade B 19, Harpool 6

Saul Campuzano and Issac Sierra each scored touchdowns to lead Calhoun to a victory over Harpool.

Campuzano, who finished the night with 102 yards rushing on five carries, scored on a 95-yard run. Sierra returned an interception 30 yards to paydirt.

Sierra ended the night with two interceptions and five tackles. Jovanni Garner had four tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery.

Philip Torrey had two receptions for 22 yards as Calhoun evened its record at 2-2.

McMath eighth-grade A 36, Crownover 14

The McMath Tigers improved to 3-0 with a hard-fought victory over the Crownover Cowboys.

McMath quarterback Clayton Tune threw a pair of 4-yard touchdown passes to Wilson Strange, and Tyrus Johnson scored on a 1-yard run. Nick Edwards scored on runs of 4 and 24 yards, and Alex Roussos added three extra-point kicks.

Tune finished the night with 125 yards passing while Johnson led the receiving corps with 65 yards. Edwards led the rushing attack with 85 yards.

Defensively for McMath, Juan Rabago and Collin Davis had interceptions while Cody Perez and Johnson had fumble recoveries. Jeovanni Dodson was singled out for his strong play.

Trent Ponsonby scored one of the Crownover touchdowns on a 5-yard run and threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Colton Phillips. Taylor Wallace added an extra-point kick.

On defense, Dylan Bourey had an interception and Arian Bhat recovered a fumble for Crownover.

Crownover eighth-grade B 14, McMath 0

The Crownover Cowboys got two long touchdowns and a strong defensive effort in shutting out McMath.

Michael Cook scored on a 65-yard run and Josh Burgess caught a 65-yard pass from Harrison Babbitt. Cristian Molinar led the defense with an interception.

Harpool seventh-grade A 42, Calhoun 0

The Harpool Longhorns (2-1) had seven players get into the scoring column in Harpool’s shutout victory over Calhoun.

Chris Brooks, Julian Mendoza, Ronald Taylor and Cade Ford each scored rushing touchdowns, while Christian Reyes caught a TD pass from Blake Galan. Kicker Brent Jackson was good on four extra points and a 20-yard field goal.

Calhoun was led offensively by Danny Vinvente, who had two catches for 20 yards, and Angel Garica with 25 yards on four carries.

Harpool seventh-grade B 19, Calhoun 6

Harpool’s Ty Mongo scored a pair of touchdowns as the Longhorns remained perfect at 3-0.

Mongo caught a touchdown pass from Koency Hord and returned a kickoff for a score, and Jake Scott scored a touchdown on a pass from Nick Stillwell.

For Calhoun, Landry Williams scored on a 12-yard run. He was 3-of-6 passing for 70 yards and had eight carries for 35 yards. Jorden King caught three passes for 70 yards, while Eric O’Bryan and Jorge Rivas led the defense in tackles. Rivas had a fumble recovery.

Navo seventh-grade A 18, Myers 0

Deondre Dansby rushed for three touchdowns as the Navo Panthers evened their record at 2-2 with a victory over the Myers Titans.

Jhari Grose led the defensive effort for the Panthers with an interception.

Navo seventh-grade B 18, Myers 0

The Navo Panthers remained undefeated with a shutout victory over Myers.

Kerrell Woods scored two touchdowns and Tristan Randolph rushed for a score for the Panthers.

Crownover seventh-grade B 27, McMath 7

Quarterback Sasha Stone threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead the Crownover Cowboys (2-1-1) to a 20-point victory over the McMath Tigers.

Stone had touchdowns passes of 22 yards to Devon Gervais and 15 yards to Jack Massey and ran 17 yards for another score. Massey also scored on a 77-yard kickoff return and recovered a fumble on defense.

Crownover also got strong offensive play from Ryan Goswick, Jaiden Tucker, Austin Beall, Nate Schiele and Peter Hays. Defensively, Josh Domerico had a fumble recovery and Tim Parker recorded a sack.

Ian Keyes scored the lone touchdown for McMath on a 55-yard run, and Armando DeLeon added the conversion.
