Middle school football: Undefeated McMath wraps up district championship

The McMath Tigers, behind a strong team effort, completed an undefeated eighth-grade season Tuesday night with a 22-20 victory over the Harpool Longhorns in A-team action.

The victory gave McMath (8-0) the district championship.

Clayton Tune, Tyrus Johnson and Nick Edwards were offensive standouts for the Tigers. Tune finished with 105 yards passing, scored on a 25-yard TD run and connected with Johnson, who finished with 80 yards in receptions, on a 20-yard scoring pass. Edwards had 95 yards rushing and a touchdown. Alex Roussos added a pair of extra-point kicks.

On defense, McMath’s Juan Rabago had several key tackles and three pass breakups. Jeovanni Dodson, Alexis Perez, Jacob Dean, Wilson Strange and Collin Davis turned in strong performances.

McMath eighth-grade B 16, Harpool 14

Nedim Biba rushed for 125 yards and scored twice to lead the McMath Tigers to a two-point victory over Harpool. Diego Soriano and Zoe Neale added extra-point kicks to complete the Tiger scoring.

Zack Kress, Adam Goff, Brian Alton, Kris Callaway, Austin Cooper, Landon Andrews, Ricardo Vasquez and Gabriel Vega turned in strong performances as McMath finished the season with a 3-5 record.

Crownover eighth-grade A 33, Navo 27

Trent Ponsonby scored three touchdowns and Trevon Turner added two as Crownover wrapped up the season with a 5-3 record.

Ponsonby scored on runs of 2, 3 and 10 yards, Turner had TD runs of 6 and 7 yards and Taylor Wallace added a conversion kick.

Crownover’s Dylan Bourey had two receptions for 53 yards, and Colton Phillips, Gio Archer and Devon Jefferson also were offensive standouts.

Navo seventh-grade A 31, Crownover 31

Deondre Dansby scored a touchdown with less than two minutes to play as the Navo Panthers rallied to tie unbeaten Crownover. The Cowboys clinched the district title with a 6-0-2 record.

Dansby, who has been an offensive standout all season, scored four touchdowns on the night and Alex Rivera added a TD as Navo finished with a 4-3-1 record.

Isaac Carrillo scored three touchdowns for the Cowboys on runs of 5, 12 and 13 yards while Cole Shroeder scored on a 3-yard run and passed for a TD on a 47-yard pass play to Devion Harmon.

Crownover seventh-grade B 12, Navo 6

The Crownover Cowboys’ defense came up with three turnovers to help secure their sixth win of the season.

Gavin Webster and Nate Schiele had interceptions and Jack Massey had a fumble recovery for the Cowboys (6-1-1).

Daniel Thompson scored on a 20-yard pass from Sasha Stone and DeJuan Harris had a 15-yard TD run to account for the Crownover scoring.

Harpool seventh-grade A 19, McMath 6

Julian Mendoza scored a pair of touchdowns as the Harpool Longhorns rolled to a 13-point win over McMath.

Chris Brooks scored the other Longhorn touchdown and Christian Reyes caught a conversion pass to complete the scoring for Harpool (5-3).

McMath’s score came on a 62-yard run by Corbin Shelly, who finished with 95 yards rushing. Oscar Gonzalez had 26 yards on the ground and one reception for eight yards. Isaiah Wofford rushed for 10 yards and had one reception for 10 yards, Deshawn Howard had an interception and Sebastian Price had a fumble recovery.

Harpool seventh-grade B 13, McMath 0

The Harpool Longhorns recorded a shutout in a hard-fought victory over the McMath Tigers to claim the district crown with a perfect 8-0 record.

Matthew Kasitz rushed for one of the Longhorn scores, and Jared Tice had a fumble recovery for the other touchdown.

Jake Kelley and Jerry Myers led the defensive effort for McMath (3-5) with fumble recoveries, while Carter Ford was a defensive standout and John Chambers played well offensively.
